In addition to high strength and high toughness to resist bending load and sloshing impact, the liquid-carrying cargo tank construction materials must have reliable low temperature resistance and thermal insulation performance, as well as good processing technology, formability and welding performance.

At present, the main low-temperature resistant materials for the LNG ship Invar steel, 9% Ni steel and 5083 aluminum alloy. Invar steel is an iron-nickel alloy with very small thermal expansion coefficient, low thermal conductivity, low strength and hardness, high plasticity and toughness, and can maintain a fixed size in a wide temperature range. It is very expensive and has extremely high requirements for the welding process.

The main structure of 9% Ni steel is ferrite, which can be used at -196°C. It is widely used in LNG storage tanks due to its high strength and low thermal expansion rate. LNG storage tanks are generally large, and it is impossible to conduct heat treatment after welding. Therefore, in order to maintain good low temperature toughness after welding, 70% Ni steel is used as the welding material.
