As a typical aluminum-magnesium alloy (Al-Mg system), 5454 aluminum alloy has magnesium (2.4-3.0%) as the main alloying element, combined with manganese (0.50-1.0%) and chromium (0.05-0.20%) to form a unique corrosion-resistant system. This composition design enables 5454 aluminum properties advantageous.

Balanced mechanical properties

Its tensile strength is ≥215MPa, yield strength is ≥85MPa, and elongation is ≥10% (δ10), with medium strength and good plasticity. Compared with 5052, the strength of 5454 is increased by about 20%, but it still maintains excellent processing formability.

Outstanding corrosion resistance

5454 aluminum sheet performs particularly well in harsh environments like sea water corrosion, stress corrosion, acid rain and industrial pollution, so it is widely used in marine facility pipelines, chemical equipment, tank trucks,etc.

Compatible with welding and surface treatment

TIG and MIG welding processes can be used, and the weld strength can reach more than 85% of the parent material. After anodizing, a uniform oxide film is formed on the surface, which is suitable for decorative fields such as building curtain walls.

5454 aluminum alloy is formed into multiple tempers through different processing techniques to meet differentiated needs:

5454 h32/h34 (work hardening+stabilization treatment)

Performance characteristics: tensile strength increased to 250-280MPa, stress corrosion resistance enhanced.

Typical applications:

Tank truck body: withstand internal liquid pressure and external corrosive environment;

Automobile wheels: lightweight design while ensuring load-bearing capacity.

5454 h112 (natural aging after hot working)

Performance characteristics: retain mechanical properties after hot working, elongation ≥12%, suitable for complex molding.

Typical applications:

Ship structural parts: such as deck frames, cabin bulkheads;

Pressure vessels: chemical reactors, liquefied natural gas tanks.

5454 0 aluminum

(complete annealing)

Performance characteristics: lowest strength (tensile strength ≈ 180MPa), but best plasticity (elongation ≥ 25%).

Typical applications:

Deep drawing parts: such as automobile fuel tank liners, food packaging containers;

Electronic equipment housing: 3C product parts that require high-precision molding.

Uses of 5454 aluminum alloys

Tank truck making

5454 aluminum alloy has significant advantages in the application of tank trucks:

Lightweight: The density is only 2.68g/cm³, which is 60% lighter than carbon steel, improving transportation efficiency;

Corrosion resistance: It can withstand long-term erosion by petroleum and chemical liquids, and has a service life of more than 15 years;

Weldability: ER5356 welding wire is used for welding, and the weld strength meets the ASME standard.

Shipbuilding and marine engineering

Anti-seawater corrosion: Salt spray tests show that after 1000 hours of exposure to 5% NaCl solution, the corrosion rate of 5454 is only 0.02mm/year, which is better than 5154 alloy;

Structural strength: 5454 h32 alloy is used for ship decks and can withstand alternating stress of more than 20MPa.

Building and industrial fields

Building curtain wall: The surface hardness of 5454 aluminum plate after anodizing reaches 30HV, with excellent scratch resistance, suitable for high-rise building exterior decoration;

Pressure vessel: 5454 aluminum alloy in H112 state meets GB/T 150 standard, used for LNG tank liner, and can withstand low temperature of -162℃;

Automobile lightweight: New energy vehicle frame adopts 5454-H34 aluminum plate, which reduces weight by 15% and improves collision safety.
