Aluminum Sheet Metal for Semi Trailer
With the global logistics industry's pursuit of efficiency and environmental protection, lightweighting of semi-trailers has become an irreversible trend. The weight of traditional steel semi-trailers generally exceeds 8 tons, while the lightweight design using aluminum alloy plates can reduce the weight to less than 4.5 tons, a weight reduction of more than 40%. This change not only increases the single cargo capacity, but also significantly reduces fuel consumption.
The core of the performance of semi-trailer aluminum sheet lies in the optimization of alloy composition. The alloy systems currently used in mainstream applications include:
5-series aluminum-magnesium alloy
Aluminium alloy 5083: The magnesium content is 4.5%-5.5%, and it has strong corrosion resistance. It is widely used in tank semi-trailer tanks (such as chemical liquid transportation) and refrigerated car bodies, and can withstand extreme temperatures from -40℃ to 80℃.
Aluminium alloy 5754: The magnesium content is 3%-4%, and the welding performance is excellent. 5754 aluminum sheet is used for body structural parts (such as frame longitudinal beams) and doors. The fatigue strength is 30% higher than that of ordinary steel.
Aluminium alloy 5454: Designed for harsh environments, it has a lifespan of 5 times that of ordinary steel in salt spray corrosion tests and is commonly used in container semi-trailers in coastal areas.
6 Series Aluminum-Magnesium-Silicon Alloy
6061: After heat treatment and strengthening, the tensile strength reaches 275MPa, which is used for lightweight frames and axles, and can replace traditional Q345 steel, reducing weight by 20% and reducing costs by 15%.
6005A: A new high-strength alloy with a yield strength of 350MPa. It has been used in large quantities in battery trays of new energy semi-trailers and meets the IP67 waterproof grade requirements.
7 Series Ultra-High Strength Alloy
7075: Anti-collision beams and bumpers are manufactured through hot forming processes, with a tensile strength of over 500MPa and a collision energy absorption efficiency that is 40% higher than steel, but the cost is relatively high. It is currently mostly used in high-end cold chain vehicles.
Typical applications
Tank semi-trailer
Tank: 5083-O aluminum sheet metal for trailer is used, with a thickness of 6-8mm. The welding process is upgraded to laser-MIG composite welding. The weld strength reaches 95% of the parent material, and the pressure bearing capacity is increased to 2.5MPa.
Van and fence semi trailer
Van body: 6061-T6 aluminum sheet is roll-formed, and with modular assembly technology, the weight of a single box is reduced by 1.2 tons and the volume is increased by 15%.
Fence structure: 5052-H32 alloy pipe replaces square steel, the grid spacing is reduced to 150mm, and the load capacity is increased to 40 tons.
Special transport vehicles
Refrigerated truck: 5083 aluminum alloy + polyurethane foam sandwich structure.
Liquid tank truck: 5454 aluminum alloy tank body is ASME certified, which can transport ultra-low temperature media such as LNG and liquid oxygen, and has low temperature impact resistance of -196℃.
